Your Period Is Sacred Time, not a Nuisance
For women in their reproductive years, menstruation is a natural part of life. Each month, our bodies bleed for around three to seven days as part of a deeply intelligent and cyclical process. Yet so many women grow up seeing their period as an inconvenience — something to hide, suppress, or simply push through.
A tampon in. A couple of painkillers. Carry on with the day as though nothing is happening.
For many years, this was my experience too.
But the truth is: you are bleeding. Your body is moving through an enormous physical, emotional, and energetic process. Your period — your moon time — is not something to ignore. It is sacred time. A time for rest, reflection, release, and surrender.
Honouring the Wisdom of the Body
Every cycle, your body works tirelessly in preparation for potential new life. Over the course of several weeks, hormones shift, an egg is released, and the womb lining thickens to create a nourishing space for pregnancy.
When pregnancy does not occur, the body sheds that lining through menstruation. Blood becomes the visible expression of release — the closing of one cycle and the beginning of another.
This is not a small thing.
Our bodies are constantly creating, preparing, releasing, and renewing. Menstruation is evidence of the incredible intelligence and power within the female body. It deserves reverence, not resentment.
Remembering the Sacredness of Moon Time
In many ancient traditions, women would gather together during their bleeding time. They stepped away from daily responsibilities and allowed themselves to simply be.
They rested. Sang. Wove. Shared stories. Reflected. Supported one another in peaceful, uninterrupted spaces.
There was an understanding that menstruation was not weakness, but wisdom.
Today, modern life often asks the opposite of us. We are expected to remain constantly productive, available, and achieving. Rest is frequently viewed as laziness rather than necessity.
Yet nature itself teaches us otherwise.
Winter arrives each year as a season of stillness and restoration before spring’s renewal. Trees shed their leaves. Animals hibernate. The earth pauses before blooming again.
Everything in nature is cyclical.
And so are we.
The Power of Rest and Reflection
When we ignore our need for rest and try to give 100% every single day, we eventually become depleted, exhausted, and disconnected from ourselves.
But what if your period became an invitation instead?
An invitation to slow down.
To journal.
To draw.
To make art.
To nourish yourself with warm, comforting foods.
To allow your body the space it needs to release what is ready to be shed — physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
During menstruation, many women notice heightened intuition, increased sensitivity, vivid dreams, or a stronger connection to their inner world. Energy naturally turns inward. We become quieter, slower, and more receptive.
This can be a deeply spiritual time.
When we create spaciousness during our moon time, we open ourselves to receiving guidance from within — messages from our intuition, our higher self, and the divine force of creation itself.
Returning to the Cycle
Your period is not a nuisance to endure.
It is a sacred pause.
A reminder that life moves in cycles of creation, release, rest, and renewal. When we honour these rhythms instead of resisting them, we reconnect with our bodies, our intuition, and our feminine wisdom.
So next time your moon time arrives, ask yourself:
How can I support myself more gently during this cycle?
Perhaps the greatest gift we can give ourselves is permission to slow down, listen deeply, and honour the sacred work our bodies are already doing.
